Fare zones are used to determine ticket prices. The more zones you travel through, the higher the fare. The start and destination of the journey define the valid fare for the ticket required.
The MVV area is divided into fare zones for all ticket offers:
To calculate the fare, you must select the appropriate area of validity based on the desired route, e.g. Zone M for a journey in the city of Munich or Zone M - 5 for a journey from Munich's Marienplatz to the airport. Journeys via detours are cheaper, as you only pay once for zones you travel through more often.
When purchasing the ticket, the zone of validity is specified and the ticket is only valid for the zone printed on it.
In principle, the following applies: In the zone tariff, i.e. one-way tickets, season tickets and day tickets, at least zone M or two tariff zones must always be paid for; this is the basic price for these tickets.
In the case of season tickets, a fare zone can also be purchased individually.
Many stops are located in two zones (e.g. Dachau in Zone 1 and Zone 2). Depending on the direction of travel, the correct zone can be selected and the cheaper price paid. For the journey from Dachau to Laim, for example, you pay for zone M - 1, from Dachau to Petershausen you pay for zones 2 to 4. The diagram on the right illustrates this.
As the number of zones increases, so does the maximum possible travel time for a one-way ticket and for a season ticket:
1 hour: short distance
2 hours: Zone M or 2 zones
3 hours: from zone M-1 or from 3 zones
5 hours: from zone M-5 or from 7 zones
